Become a Teacher

Teaching SRE is a great way to give back and get involved with the children and young families in your local community. SRE Teachers have the opportunity to impact young lives with the good news of Jesus.

1. Contact your church

The first thing you need to do is speak to the Church Coordinator and let them know you’re interested in becoming an SRE Teacher.

The coordinator will let you know what the steps are to become an authorised representative of your church. All SRE Teachers must be connected with and authorised by their church as their representative.

2. Apply for a Working With Children check (WWCC)

The Working With Children Check is a requirement for anyone who works or volunteers in child-related work in NSW.

It involves a National Police Check (criminal history record check) and a review of reportable workplace misconduct. As a volunteer, it’s free to apply for your WWCC. Visit Service NSW for more information on how to apply.

3. Attend approved training

SRE Teachers are required to attend initial training in Child Protection and Classroom Management, as well as ongoing professional development sessions.

Training is interactive and designed to give you practical skills, overcome difficulties and impart confidence. We run training sessions throughout Newcastle and the Hunter region throughout the year. We’re aware that SRE Teachers are volunteers, so almost all of our training sessions are free.

4. Observe another teacher in the classroom

Classrooms are ever-changing, as schools stay up-to-date with new developments in education and technology.

Watching an SRE Teacher run a class in the classroom is an excellent way to become familiar with the dynamics of a classroom full of kids and the equipment you have available. You can also ask them any questions you have and learn from their experience.

5. Join a teaching team

We have teams of SRE Teachers across the Hunter region, so you’re never alone in this new endeavour.

Teachers are authorised on the basis that they teach only an approved curriculum. Curriculum materials will be provided for you to use in your classes. We provide on-going training, resources and support to increase your skills and build confidence.

Now it’s time to put your skills into practice and share the hope of Jesus in your local school.

Are you ready?
